Family Foundation to help victims of Italy earthquake

MILAN, Italy– The 7th World Meeting of Families has committed to help the initiative of Coldiretti to aid victims of the recent earthquake that hit Emiglia Romagna and left 24 people dead and around 15,000 others affected.

altColdiretti’s operation “Seed of Solidarity”, in cooperation with Family Foundation 2012, will last until June 3, 2012 at the Family Fair at Milan City Fair.

By buying “Seed of Solidarity” the 50,000 visitors expected at the Family Fair including many from abroad, will make a concrete gesture to help the families of workers and employers of one of the most important economic sectors of the country.

Three thousand Grana Padano cheeses will also being  sold to help farms and dairy farmers affected at Mantua.

The government has estimated 250 million euro in losses in agro-food sector in last week’s earthquake.

But the May 29 earthquake has worsened the damage. Aging warehouses and buildings collapsed and rendered homes uninhabitable.

altAt the opening press conference for the VII World Meeting of Families, Milan Archbishop Angelo Scola has expressed his sadness and has shared his sentiments to the victims of the earthquake in Emiglia Romagna.

“We want to express our solidarity with the families of the earthquake victims, praying to the Father for those who have died. We promise our prayers and also our material support,” Cardinal Scola said.

Aside from Scola, Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, also expressed the same sentiments for the victims. (article and photo by Zita Baron)
