Long-Stay Permit Renewal Deadline by August 3, 2023

Rome, July 21, 2023 – On August 3, 2023, the deadline for requesting the renewal, or replacement with the new model, of long-stay permits expires.

Indeed, in accordance with Law 238/2021, a new uniform model of residence permit for long-stay residents has been introduced, which differs from the previous model – in form – as it now indicates a “validity” of 10 years instead of being unlimited. Therefore, a two-and-a-half-year period (from February 2021 to August 2023) has been granted to allow foreign citizens to request the update and replacement of their permits with the new model, which is now uniform across other European countries.

It is important to note that even though the “new” permit indicates an expiry date (after ten years), nothing changes in its contents, as the permit still grants permanent right of residence.

Who needs to request the update with the new model:

The obligation to proceed with the update applies to holders of long-term residence permits issued for more than 10 years.

Starting from August 3, 2023, these permits are no longer valid for staying in Italian territory, with the consequent risk of losing the permit, and must, therefore, be replaced.

Procedure to request the update:

The request for updating the previous permit must be made through the same procedures, using the postal kit, and can also be assisted by the patronage services.
